Winter Pest Control: Do I need it?

WINTER PEST CONTROL

Many people are not sure if they need pest control in the winter. Is it too cold for pests? Surely, the bugs die when the grass frosts over in the morning. Well, here we attempt to explain why pest control is necessary in the winter, even possibly more so than in the spring and summer!

Most people will assume we recommend winter pest control because that is what we do—we are a pest control company, after all! However, we truly believe that pests take advantage of people in the winter more than most think.

  1. Activity:

When thinking about fall, what often happens? The trees turn, the temperature drops, and pests enter your home. The most common culprits are boxelder bugs and Asian lady beetles. However, did you know that even more critters are trying to get into your home?

Pests like mice, rats, spiders, ants, roaches, and even termites can become unwanted visitors to your home.

Each of these pests seeks warmth and places where food will be present; they won’t succumb to freezing temperatures and can escape predators. Therefore, they move into your home when you think the coast is clear. Even though pest activity may not seem present, fall going into winter is one of the most active times for pests inside and outside the home.

  1. Mild Winters:

Each year, there seems to be less and less snow, especially in the Midwest States. Michigan has been no exception, and as an effect, the number of pests has gone up. Most think that if temperatures get to freezing or below, for a short period of time, bugs, insects, and pests will die off. However, that is not true, and the ground needs at least 5-8 days of constant freezing temps. (This does not factor in the soil type, where you live, or how much moisture your ground can hold.) If the temperature goes above this freezing point, the clock will reset, and you will have to start again. Typically speaking, that leaves only 2 months out of the year when pests could come into contact with the right conditions to die off.

What will happen?

Simply put, each year, Michigan gets a mild winter the following spring, and the number of pests exponentially grows and increases tenfold. This increases the likelihood of people coming into contact with pests such as wasps, roaches, ants, mice, and many others. Sooner or later, pests will become too much for anyone to handle, and professionals might have to get involved when it is too late.

  1. Prevention:
